Entry into Auctions: An Experimental Analysis

چکیده
This paper investigates entry decisions into first and second price auctions using an experimental design to extract information on willingness-to-pay to enter (WTE). We find that subjects tend to overpay to enter both auction formats. In particular, if the subjects believe they will be bidding against bidders following the risk-neutral Nash strategy, their WTE is greater than the optimal risk-neutral amount 97% of the time for first-price auctions (FPA) and 90% for second-price auctions (SPA). If they believe that they are bidding against subjects who bid as do the other subjects, they submit a WTE that is too high 92% of the time for FPA and 69% of the time for SPA. We also find, in line with previous studies, significant overbidding in both the FPA and SPA. We then investigate whether introducing risk aversion (RA) or “joy of winning” (JOY) can explain the joint observation of over-entry and overbidding. In particular, using bid data alone, we structurally estimate three models, one allowing RA only, one allowing for JOY only and one allowing for both RA and JOY. While a model with JOY alone overestimates WTE, we find that RA alone can explain 38% of WTE but a model with both RA and JOY (where RA is estimated using FPA bids, and JOY is estimated using SPA bids) can explain 65% of WTE. Moreover, JOY appears to explain nearly all of the of the male WTE but only 44% of the female WTE. JEL CODES: C91, D44, D81

Multi-Unit Auctions
We survey experimental research on multi-unit auctions with an emphasis on topics that may be of a unifying interest to experimental, as well as theoretical and empirical economists. Topics include static and dynamic multi-unit auctions; combinatorial auctions and efficient auction design; simultaneous and sequential auctions; bidder asymmetry and endogenous entry, and collusion in auctions. We...
متن کاملCommon Value Auctions with Voluntary and Qualified Entry
We study auctions under different entry rules. Existing evidence about common value auctions points toward a severe overbidding phenomenon (winner’s curse) and high bankruptcy rate. In an experiment, we show that voluntary entry makes winner’s curse bids and bankruptcies more frequent, compared to a treatment with random assignment to the auctions. Instead, bankruptcy rates decrease when bidder...
متن کاملExperimental Evidence on the Endogenous Entry of Bidders in Internet Auctions
This paper tests the empirical predictions of recent theories of the endogenous entry of bidders in auctions. Data come from a field experiment, involving sealed-bid auctions for collectible trading cards over the Internet. Manipulating the reserve prices in the auctions as an experimental treatment variable generates several results. First, observed participation behavior indicates that bidder...
متن کاملTheoretical and experimental analysis of auctions with negative externalities
We investigate a private value auction in which a single entranton winning imposes a negative externality on two regularbidders. In an English auction when all bidders are active, regular bidders free ride, exiting before price reaches their values. In a rst-price sealed-bid auction incentives for free riding and aggressive bidding coexist, limiting free riding compared to the English au...
متن کاملA Comparative Study of Multi-Attribute Continuous Double Auction Mechanisms
Auctions have been as a competitive method of buying and selling valuable or rare items for a long time. Single-sided auctions in which participants negotiate on a single attribute (e.g. price) are very popular. Double auctions and negotiation on multiple attributes create more advantages compared to single-sided and single-attribute auctions. Nonetheless, this adds the complexity of the auctio...
